Information from TMS's College Counselor

FOR EVERYONE

Colleges Visiting TMS: A full list of the colleges currently scheduled to visit as well as a list of a few Open House events and local information sessions are posted on the Family Connection site. Here are the colleges scheduled to visit us in the next two weeks. Please sign up on the college bulletin board and get the permission of your teacher to attend.
  • Sarah Lawrence College - Tuesday 9/22 at 1:00
  • Drew University - Tuesday 9/29 at 9:00
  • Wheaton College (Massachusetts) - Tuesday 9/29 at 10:15
  • Randolph College - Tuesday 9/29 at 12:30
  • Willamette University - Thursday 10/1 at 1:30
College of the Week - Located just fifteen minutes north of New York City on a beautiful, wooded campus, Sarah Lawrence is nationally renowned for its rigorous academic and creative standards. These are fostered by small seminar classes and individual student-faculty tutorials made possible by a very low student-to-faculty ratio of 9-to-1. It is a lively community of students, scholars, and artists offering outstanding programs. Sarah Lawrence graduates include journalist and television personality Barbara Walters, White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, Author Alice Walker, television producer J.J. Abrams and designer Vera Wang.

Did you know?
- Out of state students at the University of Oregon, account for 42% of the student population. As a matter of fact, unlike the California public universities, Oregon's public universities are not suffering from state budget woes and they are more interested than ever in recruiting students from California. To sweeten the deal, Oregon's public universities often participate in the Western Undergraduate Exchange, a program whereby students from neighboring states may be eligible for reduced tuition.

Visual and Performing Arts College Fair
- October 17th from 3-5 PM at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music - The Performing and Visual Arts (PVA) College Fairs are designed for students interested in pursuing undergraduate and graduate study in the areas of music, dance, theater, visual arts, graphic design, and other related disciplines. Held each fall, attendees learn about educational opportunities, admission and financial aid, portfolio days, audition and entrance requirements, and much more by meeting with representatives from colleges, universities, conservatories, festivals and other educational institutions with specialized programs in the visual and performing arts. Click here for more information.

My Schedule this Week - I'll be on campus Monday 9-4, Tuesday 1-4 and Wednesday 8-4.
FOR SENIORS

Application Kick-off on Wednesday- We'll spend the day at school, starting applications (maybe finishing a few!), working on personal statements/essays and handling the paperwork for teacher recommendations. It will be an interactive day with lots to do no matter what your plans for next year include or how far along you are in the process. Teachers and staff will be there to help you along the way. Please bring a laptop if you have one, your college folder with any paperwork I've given you and lunch. We'll start promptly at 9:00 - in fact, come earlier for bagels.

Do you need a resume along with your college applications? Sometimes the extracurricular/volunteer/work experience sections of an application are just not adequate to fully explain your activities. In some cases, it's a good idea to send colleges a resume of your activities along with your application. Family Connection has an easy to use resume builder that I recommend you check out. Log into your Family Connection account and select "my resume". Need help - just ask!

SAT/ACT Practice Test - If you are interested in taking a timed practice SAT or ACT on Saturday 10/3 at 8:00 AM (to simulate actual test conditions), please add your name to the sign up sheet on my door. If you're taking the SAT on 10/10, this is a good way to prepare!

Free Test Prep at the San Francisco Library branches - I don't know anything about this test prep company, but the price is right (then again, you get what you pay for...). More info can be found at http://www.successlinktutoring.com/SFPL/

SAT/ACT Registration Deadlines - If you need to take or retake the SAT, SAT Subject Tests or ACT this fall, the registration deadlines are approaching. The late registration deadline for the October 10th SAT or SAT Subject Tests is 9/23. To register go to wwwcollegeboard.com. The late registration deadline for the October 24th ACT is 10/2 and you can register at www.actstudent.org.
FOR JUNIORS

It's great to be seeing juniors at the college reps visits! We have lots more coming, so keep signing up, showing up and asking great questions!

Want to know more about college admission tests? I'll fill you in later in the year but if you're itching for more info now, Compass Test Prep, a well-respected local test company, is offering evening presentations in Mill Valley and Redwood City. In addition to providing excellent private tutoring, they study the tests in great detail and have lots of interesting data. Go to www.compassprep.com/seminars for more info.
